Did you know? Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the United States! Nearly half a million people die every year from smoking, including those who were exposed to secondhand smoke. With new and emerging tobacco products, such as vapes/e-cigarettes, young people are continually being targeted to use tobacco. Every day, about 2,000 people younger than 18 smoke their first cigarette, and even more try chewing tobacco, little cigars and vaping products.
Your voice is important in shaping your community. Access, affordability, marketing and education can impact young people’s decision to use tobacco products. It’s time to let local and state leaders hear your voice by participating in the advocacy letter or poster design contest!
Advocacy topics may include:
- Promoting tobacco retail licensing
- Increasing tobacco taxes
- Promoting tobacco-free spaces (parks, parking lots, etc.)
- Increasing state funding to support tobacco prevention and cessation resources
- Restricting flavored tobacco products, including vapor products
- Restricting tobacco advertising on storefronts
- Reducing tobacco retailer density
